Overall, happiness is reached by keeping peace with others and one's self, which can be obtained through meditation. Therefore, the Dalai Lama concludes that the purpose isn't to create tension, but a positive atmosphere. This gives our life meaning, which leads to overall happiness.

Q: What attracted you to this book?
A:

The book’s interesting title attracted me, and the message they were trying to get across about happiness, compassion and gratitude affecting your daily life.

Q: What is the basic storyline?
A:

The Art of Happiness is a book about the purpose of life, and the very purpose is to seek happiness – whether or not one is religious. It brings to life things we already know, but these ideas and beliefs may have been covered up by the worldly baggage we learn along the way. The choice of religion or faith may be different, but still we all are searching for happiness.

Everyone is seeking something better in life, which can be developed and sustained by training the mind. The book also speaks about human warmth and compassion.

“If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.”

― Dalai Lama XIV, The Art of Happiness

Q: What were some highlights?
A:

The book looks at happiness through different perspectives from two different authors. Although the perspectives differ, the book also mentioned that there are similarities that all of us share in being part of the human race. Most of us are seeking something better in life. It also highlights the understanding and the importance of other people’s feelings and emotions, which can reduce conflicts and problems with others.

Q: What insights have you gained?
A:

One of the most insightful things that I have gained from this book is that it is essential to appreciate this life. We also need to overcome obstacles in life in order to achieve happiness, and the first step would be to change the behaviour and also to put in a sustained effort. Your expectations shouldn’t be too high, as they often lead to disappointment.

Q: Who do you think should read this book?
A:

I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to be motivated or who wishes to be inspired. The Art of Happiness shows how these threads can impact your daily life.
