Hello! I'm Elizabeth, and let me tell you about my six-week internship at Byte Orbit, a rollercoaster of experiences. I'm in my third year studying Bachelor of Design at Inscape Education Group, and I'm specialising in Ideation Design. Ideation Design is where we solve problems using design thinking mixed with business and future studies.

I couldn't contain my excitement when I heard about the opportunity to do a six-week internship as part of my final year at Inscape. And to top it all off, it was at Byte Orbit! I had a taste of working with Byte Orbit's fantastic team last year, where I got to create an inspiring brief on the tourism industry. The experience was a total blast, and it sparked something in me that made me want more!

This year, I jumped at the chance to do a longer internship at Byte Orbit. In this blog post, I'll guide you on my thrilling journey through cutting-edge projects and creative collaborations. Oh, and let's not forget about my amazing fellow interns, Leney, my partner in Ideation Design mischief, and Luke, the psychology whiz!

So buckle up, folks. We're starting this adventure from the very beginning, and trust me, it's going to be a fun ride. Let's go!

Week One: Getting Acquainted with Byte Orbit

The first day of my internship at Byte Orbit was an exciting one. On July 3, 2023, I arrived at the office promptly at 9:00 a.m., feeling a mix of nervousness and anticipation. I then received a warm welcome from Sonny from HR, who introduced me to the Byte Orbit office and its dynamic team. We were provided with laptops, t-shirts, and other essentials to get started. Afterward, Marichen, our mentor, introduced us to the projects we'd be working on which were: Test Pilots, Shyft, a Corporate Expense Management Tool in the Ventures space, Flyte Zone, and IRIS. The week started with research on AI trends, narrowing down key trends, and formulating research questions for the Test Pilots project. This allowed me the opportunity to apply my academic background to real-world challenges, which was invigorating, and I embraced the unique learning curve.

Week Two: Immersed in Projects

During the second week, we dived deeper into our projects. We worked on refining the Test Pilots brief and attended meetings for the Ventures, Flyte Zone, and IRIS projects. We then worked on the IRIS and Flyte Zone competitor analysis and also had productive check-ins with Marichen to ensure we were on track with our projects.

Week Three: Making Strides

During the third week we analysed data, continued working on our competitor analysis for IRIS and Flyte Zone, and attended workshops and meetings. Throughout the week, we focused on research, analysis, and started working on presentations. Each day presented its unique set of challenges and a diverse range of tasks. This kept us fully engaged and invested in our work, which helped us gain a better understanding of the project’s impact on the company.

Week Four: Getting Ready for the Final Presentation

Week four marked an exciting phase as we prepared for our final presentations. Our skills were put to the test as we started finalising presentations for projects like Flyte Zone and the Ventures project. We also participated in various team meetings and discussions, contributing to the company's ongoing innovations. Our presentations received valuable feedback, which allowed us to further improve our work to be presented in our final presentations.

Week Five: The Countdown to Success

The penultimate week of my internship was filled with energy and excitement. With the final presentation drawing closer, my fellow interns and I worked diligently on refining and perfecting our projects. Collaboration and communication with Marichen and the other interns were instrumental in achieving our goals.

As my internship came to a close, the final week was both nostalgic and rewarding. The last week was a whirlwind of fine-tuning presentations and incorporating feedback from colleagues, with a collaborative spirit that made us feel like a close-knit family. The presentation day was nerve-wracking, but otherwise, it was exciting and the support and praise from the Byte Orbit team made it all worthwhile.

Key Takeaways:

My internship at Byte Orbit has been a remarkable journey of growth and learning. Here are some of the key takeaways from my experience:

  1. Team Collaboration: Working alongside talented and dedicated individuals was inspiring. Collaboration and open communication played a crucial role in the success of our projects.
  2. Project Exposure: Being involved in multiple projects exposed me to different aspects of Product Design and innovation, providing a holistic view of the industry.
  3. Feedback and Improvement: Regular feedback sessions helped me identify areas for improvement and allowed me to refine my work continuously.
  4. Innovation and Creativity: Byte Orbit encourages innovative thinking and creative problem-solving, fostering an environment where new ideas are valued.
  5. Professional Growth: This internship challenged me to step out of my comfort zone, push my limits, and contribute to my personal and professional growth.
  6. Applying Ideation Methodologies: Using ideation methodologies during the discovery phase helped me dive deeper into the problem that I was trying to solve and enabled me to better understand the problem itself. Everything I have learnt in my degree and all the briefs I have completed has solidified into an exciting phase where I experienced the practical application of my knowledge in the working world at Byte Orbit. Here product design and innovation are at its peak and it was exciting to see how my degree has given me the tools to jump into the working world and to continue my learning while being productive.

My six-week internship at Byte Orbit has been nothing short of extraordinary. From the warm welcome on my first day to the exhilaration of presenting our projects, every moment has been a learning experience. I am deeply grateful to Marichen, Luke, Leney, and all the amazing colleagues who supported and guided me throughout this journey.

I want to extend a special thanks to Leo, Clara, Danny, Pieter, Alandri, Anja, and especially Marichen for their unwavering support, patience, and mentorship. Your encouragement and insights have been invaluable in shaping my growth during this internship.

As I bid farewell to this chapter, I carry cherished memories, invaluable experiences, and a sense of accomplishment. Byte Orbit will forever hold a special place in my heart, and I can't wait to see the incredible strides this organisation will make in the future.

Thank you all for joining me on this incredible journey! Until we meet again.
